Pima basketball's Mruphy trying out for U-19 Japanese national team

Pima Community College men’s basketball player Isaiah Murphy (Cienega HS) will gain experience playing basketball on another platform.

Murphy, a freshman guard, was invited to try-out for  the U-19 Japan men’s national team. If he makes the squad, he will play in the FIBA U-19 Basketball World Cup in Cairo, Egypt, from July 1-9.

He missed the first training camp in March due to playing in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament but attended the second camp from April 7-10. He will head back for the third camp from May 19-21 in Nishigaoka, Kita-ku, Tokyo. The fourth camp is from June 2-5 in Okinawa and the final one will be June 24-29 in Germany.

“It’s been quite the experience and it’s felt good to be back in Japan,” Murphy said. “The style of play is more ‘pick n roll.’ Coach Torsten (Loibl) said Japan hasn’t been strong so he wanted to recruit people with Japansese blood.”

Murphy was born in Okinawa, Japan, and moved to Anchorage, Alaska, when he was three. He returned to Misawa, Japan and lived there for six years. He moved to Tucson and attended Cienega High School when he was a sophomore.

Murphy played in all 35 games this season for the Aztecs making 13 starts. He averaged 15.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
