Aztec track claims four region titles; women take second

The Pima Community College track and field teams completed competition in the Region I Championships at Mesa Community College on Thursday.

The women’s team beat out Mesa CC in the last event of the day, the 4x400 relay, to claim second place for the second straight year. The Aztecs finished with a team score of 156. Mesa took third with 155 and Central Arizona College had a team score of 281.

The men’s team finished in third place with a team score of 144. Central Arizona took first place and Mesa finished second.

Four athletes claimed individual championships on the final day. Anfernee Alexander (Santa Cruz Valley Union HS) won the region championship in the discus with a winning throw of 148' 6". Alfonso Mejia (Douglas HS) won the 400-meter hurdles race taking the lead after the final hurdle. He finished with an improved qualifying and personal best time of 53.16 seconds. Nikki Regalado (Cienega HS) won the 1,500-meter race with an improved national qualifying and a personal best time of 4 minutes, 48.02 seconds. Raelene Yocupicio (Rio Rico HS) claimed the 800-meter race region championship and set a qualifying and a personal best time of 2:20.85. The Aztecs claimed five total individual region championships. Brianna Rodriguez (Cienega HS) won the region title in the long jump event on Tuesday.

In other events, Anthony Spendlove (Flagstaff HS) took third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal best time of 10:24.80. The 4x100 relay team of David Stiles (Yuma HS), Mejia, Darrius Morris and Kevin Snead set a national qualifying mark finishing the race with a time of 41.70. Cruz Rodriguez (Empire HS) set a national qualifying mark and a personal best in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:54.71. Marlee Sherwood (Mesa HS) and Becca Harris (Salpointe Catholic HS) took second and third respectively in the triple jump. Deante Gaines (Cibola HS) finished second in the triple jump. Regalado took second in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 18:55.93.

The Aztecs will have over 20 athletes competing at the National Championships on May 15-17 at Mesa Community College. Competition begins each day at 3 p.m.
