Pima track claims 5 region titles on final day

The Pima Community College track and field teams each took second place and produced five more regional champions on Thursday in the final day of the Region I Championships at Mesa Community College. The Aztecs had nine total regional champions to close out competition.

The men’s team finished second with a score of 178. Central Arizona College took first with 238. The women’s team finished with a team score of 187 and Central Arizona was first at 295.

On the men’s side, Lucas Ruiz (Flowing Wells HS) won the 1,500-meter race for the second straight year finishing with a time of 3 minutes, 54.79 seconds. Deante Gaines (Cibola HS) claimed the triple jump championship with a jump of 14.45 meters. Gaines took the long jump championship on Wednesday.

On the women’s side, Nikki Regalado (Cienega HS) won the 5,000-meter race with a time of 18:59.87. Aly Haskell (Empire HS) won the 400-meter race with a time of 56.88 and Marlee Sherwood (Mesa Mountain View HS) was tops in the triple jump at 11.53 meters.

The men’s 4x400 meter relay team of Ruben Canastillo (Pueblo HS), Lance Ross (Flowing Wells HS), Labriel Leach (Catalina HS) and Alfonso Mejia (Douglas HS) set a Nationals qualifying mark finishing in third place with a time of 3:17.01.

The NJCAA Outdoor National Championships will be from May 16-18 at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kan.
