PCC's Rodriguez claims region title in long jump

The Pima Community College track and field teams competed in the third day of the Region I Championships on Tuesday at Mesa Community College.

In women’s competition, the Aztecs sit in first place with 65 points. Central Arizona College is in second place with 58, Mesa Community College is third with 53, Paradise Valley Community College is fourth with 28 points and Glendale is in fifth place with nine.

For the second straight year, Brianna Rodriguez (Cienega HS) claimed the region championship in the long jump. She finished with a jump of 18' 7 3/4". Vanessa Fox (Snowflake HS) took second with a jump of 17' 7" and Maggie Prillaman (Ironwood Ridge HS) finished fifth at 17' 4". The Aztecs got 22 points in that event. They also received 18 points in the high jump from Kaysee Pilgrim (Barry Goldwater HS), Fox and Prillaman. Pilgrim took second place with a jump of 5' 5 1/4" while Fox finished behind her in third place at 5' 5 1/4" . Prillaman took fifth with a jump of 4' 7 1/2".

The 4x800 relay team of Raelene Yocupicio (Rio Rico HS), Shanice Alchesay (Alchesay HS), Nikki Regalado (Cienega HS) and Col’Bi Nez (Holbrook HS) set a national qualifying mark and took second place with a time of 9 minutes, 50.60 seconds.

Rhiannon Reese (Benson HS) improved her national qualifying mark in the pole vault and took third place with a vault of 10’6”.

The men’s track & field team finished the day in second place with a score of 51 points. Central Arizona is in first place with 54 points, Mesa CC is in third with 35 points, Glendale CC sits in fourth place with 27 and Paradise Valley CC is in fifth with 22.

Khalill Hakim (Raymond S. Kellis HS) set a national qualifier in the high jump after he tied with teammate Eddie Wilcox (Chandler HS) with a jump of 6' 8". Luke Ross took fourth in the high jump at 6' 4" and Deante Gaines (Cibola HS) took fifth at 6-2. The Aztecs got 23 points in that event.

The final day of competition in the Region I Championships will be on Thursday at Mesa Community College. Events will begin at 5 p.m.
