Toia scores first professional goal for Phx FC

Plus, our weekly update of Arizonans in professional soccer

Donny Toia scored in FC Tucson’s first home match last year, playing as a semi-pro. It took him a bit deeper into the season to do it for Phoenix FC, but he did it on Friday night against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

“It’s a dream come true,” Toia said of his first goal as a professional. “I finally got to go into a game with the possibility of going forward.”

Toia has been playing left back for Phoenix FC. He still was able to get a look at goal here and there when he would get up field, but those looks were few and far between. An injury during practice last week to forward Travis Bowen meant Toia was called in to start at forward.

“I played my game and busted my butt,” Toia said.

Toia scored nine times for FC Tucson as a forward last year. He’ll likely be at left back again when Bowen is healthy. He doesn’t have a problem with going back to the defense.

“If he (Coach David Robertson) wants me to play up front, if he wants me to play in the back, I’ll play where he wants me to play,” he said.

Unfortunately, Toia’s goal did not prove a winner for the team. Pittsburgh scored one in the 79th minute to earn a point from the match, only their second in a dreary season for the Riverhounds.

“I feel like let up in the second half,” Toia said. “We can play better than that.”

Toia and Phoenix FC will have a chance to show a little better when they travel to Pittsburgh to play the Riverhounds again on Thursday.

Arizonans around the world

Ventura Alvarado, D - Club América (Liga MX, Mexico)

Did not play this weekend.

Nat Borchers, D - Real Salt Lake (MLS)

Borchers helped keep a clean sheet for the team when he cleared a ball off the line after Corey Herzog got a shot past goal keeper Nick Rimando in the 62nd minute. It was one of only a few looks Vancouver got at the goal as Borchers and the RSL back line kept them to only three shots on goal. The final score was 2-0.

Tony Cascio, M - Colorado Rapids (MLS)

Cascio spent Saturday’s match against Toronto on the bench, but is eligible for a reserve match against Vancouver on Tuesday.

Danny Cruz, M - Philadelphia Union (MLS)

Cruz scored two beautiful goals in the second half (after being taunted by his own fans in the first half. It is Philadelphia, after all). Unfortunately for Cruz, Seattle clawed back for a 2-2 tie.

Cruz’s performance earned him a nomination for “Goal of the Week.” You can vote for him at MLSSoccer.com.

Renae Cuéllar, F – FC Kansas City (NWSL)

It’s another week, another goal for Nae Nae. This one was against Seattle off of an assist by U.S. national team player Becky Sauerbrunn in a match on Saturday.

Kiersten Dallstream, D – Seattle Reign (NWSL)

Dallstream came in as a substitute for a constantly hassled Christine Nairn in minute 70, but was unable to do much for her team as they went down to FC Kansas City 1-0 on Saturday.

Justin Davis, D – Minnesota United FC (NASL)

With his team tied with the Carolina RailHawks 2-2, Davis took a pass from Etienne Barbara and got a shot off in the waning minutes of the match. Davis was not to be the hero as the shot was saved. Saturday night’s match ended in that 2-2 draw, meaning Minnesota and Carolina are tied on points at the top of the table, with only an away goals tie breaker narrowly keeping Minnesota in first.

Nick DeLeon, M – DC United (MLS)

DC United had the weekend off.

Mix Diskerud, M – Rosenborg BK (Tippeligaen, Norway)

Diskerud played the first half in a match against Aalesunds FK. The match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Brad Evans, M - Seattle Sounders FC (MLS)

Evans played 74 minutes of a 2-2 draw with Philadelphia. The substitution left him off the field for antics that led to two Seattle and one Philadelphia player being ejected.

Robbie Findley, F - Real Salt Lake (MLS)

Robbie Findley was listed as “questionable” for a knee injury on Saturday and did not make the line-up.

Alan Gordon, F - San Jose Earthquakes (MLS)

Gordon is still serving a suspension for on-field comments.

Amy LePeilbet, D - Chicago Red Stars (NWSL)

The former ASU standout is still recovering from ACL surgery and is not expected to play this season.

Sydney Leroux, F – Boston Breakers (NWSL)

Renae Cuéllar may be scoring week after week but it is another player with Arizona connections that can lay claim to the first NWSL hat trick. Sydney Leroux put three in the back of the net after Katie Schoepfer opened the scoring on Saturday against Chicago. The day ended with Boston over the Chicago Red Stars, 4-1.

The Breakers wore commemorative shirts during their warm ups and are auctioning them off. Leroux's is currently going for $500. Proceeds go to the One Fund Boston. Bidding continues until Tuesday at 11 am.

Manya Makoski, M – Sky Blue FC (NWSL)

Makoski and Sky Blue surrendered their winning streak in a midweek match against the Western New York Flash last Wednesday. They will be facing Chicago Red Stars this Wednesday.

Pablo Mastroeni, M - Colorado Rapids (MLS)

Mastroeni is still working his way back from an injury, but is expected to play in a reserve match against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Tuesday.

Brandon McDonald, D – DC United (MLS)

DC United did not play this weekend.

Jessica McDonald, F – Chicago Red Stars (NWSL)

McDonald was a late game substitute as her team fell to the Boston Breakers on Saturday.

Sam Monahan, M – FC Honka (Naisten Liiga, Finland)

Monahan had the assist in a first half goal against PK-35 Vantaa, but her team ended the match on the wrong side of a 2-1 scoreline.

David Paul, F - Puszcza Niepołomice (II liga, Poland)

Did not play in this weekend's match with Resovia Rzeszów.

Mike Randolph, D – Atlanta Silverbacks (NASL)

Randolph played a full ninety in Saturday's draw with the San Antonio Scorpions.

Luis Robles, G - New York Red Bulls (MLS)

Robles recorded six saves in a shut-out of the Columbus Crew on Saturday.

Carlos Salcedo, D – Real Salt Lake (MLS)

RSL's reserves had no game scheduled this week, and Salcedo was not called up to the full squad.

Rob Valentino, D – Orlando City SC (USL-Pro)

Valentino scored one because, why not, everyone else was scoring. Orlando City defeated Antigua Barracuda 7 - 2.
