The Pima softball team had to fight back to avoid elimination after the first day of the Region I tournament at Yavapai College in Prescott on Friday.
In the double elimination format, the Aztecs dropped their first game against Eastern Arizona College 3-0 after managing four hits but they receovered in the afternoon game against Central Arizona College, winning 6-0.
Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) pitched a complete-game shutout and won her eighteenth game of the season. She gave up four hits and had five strikeouts with no walks.
Cynthia Pelayo (Vision HS) hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and Shawna Comeaux (Sabino HS) widened the lead with an RBI single that brought around two runs in the fifth inning. Pima led 5-0 at that point. Comeaux finished 3 for 3 with a double and a run scored as well.
Nicole Rascon (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, a run scored and two doubles. Aubre Carpenter (Sabino HS) was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Aztecs awaited the loser of Yavapai College and Eastern Arizona College, who were to play Saturday at 9 a.m. The Aztecs were set to play at 11 a.m.
