Aztec softball wraps regular season with wins

The Pima softball team ended its regular season sweeping Mesa Community College on Saturday at the West Campus. The Pima pitchers gave up one run in two games as the Aztecs finished by winning 10 of their last 11 games.

Aubre Carpenter (Sabino HS) had a great day at the plate going 5 for 8 with five runs scored and two doubles.

The Aztecs took the first game 9-1 as Mari Contreras (Sunnyside HS) won her 20th game of the season. She gave up one earned run off two hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. She finished with 202 strikeouts on the year and a 2.50 ERA.

Jessica Sipe (Mountain View HS) helped get Pima going with an RBI double that scored two runs in the first inning. Kristi Shepherd (Marana HS) contributed in the inning with an RBI single as the Aztecs scored five in the first. Sipe went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Carpenter went 4 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.

Monet Ormsby (Cholla HS) pitched a complete-game shutout in Pima's 7-0 win in the second game. Ormsby gave up eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks. She improved to 8-0 on the year.

Jessica Schneider provided more than enough offense hitting two home runs. She hit a 3-run shot in the third inning and a solo homer in the sixth. She finished 3 for 3 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Carpenter was 1 for 4 reaching base three times and scoring three runs.

The Aztecs finished the regular season at 49-12 and 39-9 in conference play. They open the NJCAA Region I Tournament against Eastern Arizona College on Friday at 10 a.m. at Yavapai College.
