PCC's No. 1 doubles team Avalos & Ton claim regional title

The Pima Community College men’s and women’s tennis teams competed at the Region I Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale.

The men’s team came away with some hardware as they took second place in the team standings while the women’s team placed third. Both teams qualified for their respected NJCAA national tournaments.

The No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Marc Avalos (Sunnyside HS) and Francisco Ton (Nogales HS) rallied after dropping the first set to claim the Region I championship after defeating Mesa Community College’s Noel Maurin and Linus Holthey 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. They secured the final four points of the final set to win it.

In other men’s championship action, Avalos dropped his No. 1 singles match to David Felix 6-3, 6-2 while freshman Francisco Sotelo (Cholla HS) fell to Mesa’s Matt Fisher at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Raj Singh Kaila (Yuma HS) was shut out against Eduardo Couto from Mesa at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Sotelo and sophomore Dalton Reisig (Catalina Foothills HS) lost their No. 2 doubles championship match to Felix and Gergo Rendek 6-0, 6-2.

The men’s tennis team will compete in the NJCAA National Tournament from May 15-19 at the Collin County Tennis Facilities in Plano, Texas. 

The women’s tennis team will play in the NJCAA National Tournament at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center from May 7-12.
