Alexander sets two national qualifiers at Mesa CC Classic

The Pima Community College track and field teams set and improved on several national qualifying marks Friday in the Mesa Community College Classic Invitational.

Anfernee Alexander (Santa Cruz Valley Union) improved on his national qualifying mark in the discus event. He had a qualifying throw of 152' 6" — improving his first qualifier by four inches. Alexander also set a national qualifying throw in the shot put with a throw of 50' 3/4".

Alfonso Mejia (Douglas HS) improved on his qualifying time in the 400-meter hurdles as he finished in first place with a time of 53.58 seconds. Kevin Snead also improved on his qualifying time in the 100-meter dash as he finished fourth with a time of 10.58.

In other men’s competition, Eddie Wilcox (Chandler HS) took first place in the high jump with a jump of 6'-6" while Khalil Hakim (Raymond S. Kellis HS) and Deante Gaines (Cibola HS) took second and third respectively in the long jump. Hakim finished with a jump of 23' 2" while Gaines was at 22' 11 3/4" . Gaines also took second in the triple jump at 44' 9".

In women’s competition, Brianna Rodriguez (Cienega HS) set a national qualifying mark and took first place in the long jump with an 18' 6" leap.

In other women’s competition, Becca Harris (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Marlee Sherwood (Mesa HS) took second and third place respectively in the triple jump. Harris’ jump was at 37' 1 1/4" and Sherwood had a jump of 36' 11". The relay team of Maggie Prillaman (Ironwood Ridge HS), Rodriguez, Tenishia Reynolds (Sabino HS) and Kathy Fisher (Sahuaro HS) took first place in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:04.69.

The Aztecs will compete in the ACCAC Meet #2 at Mesa Community College on Friday.
