Aztec softball battles in loss, cruises in victory

Thanks to

The Pima Community College softball team split a doubleheader at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Tuesday. While the Aztecs lost a narrow fight in the first game, it was a different story in the second.

The Aztecs found themselves down in the first game and fought back to take the lead, but Chandler-Gilbert won in the end, 8-7.

Trailing 6-0 going into the sixth inning, the Aztecs responded by scoring seven runs but Chandler-Gilbert scored two in the seventh to win it. Jessica Schneider (Sahuaro HS) went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Mari Contreras (Sunnyside HS) went 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) took the loss (13-6).

The offense took over in Pima's 9-1 win in the second game, which was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

Shayna Binnion (Marana HS) got the win to improve to 4-0 on the year, giving up five hits and earning four strikeouts. Jessica Sipe (Mountain View HS) hit a grand-slam in the second inning. Nicole Rascon (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 4 for 4 and scored three runs while Gemma Contreras (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

The Aztecs are 39-10 overall and 29-7 in conference play. Pima returns home to host South Mountain Community College on Saturday. The first game starts at noon.
