Toia makes Phoenix FC debut

FC Tucson forward plays defense for Wolves

Phoenix FC’s debut this weekend didn’t go as they would have liked. Their trip to Fullerton’s Titan Stadium ended with ten men on the field and two goals down against the Los Angeles Blues.

Still, former FC Tucson forward Donny Toia is taking some positives from the experience.

“We’re bonding really well and we have good chemistry,” said Toia. “We’ll definitely pick it up.”

Tucson native Toia was a regular up front for FC Tucson last year, who had five goals and two assists in fifteen matches with the Old Pueblo club. Phoenix FC, however, has two able people to play in the attack: former Ventura County Fusion striker Travis Bowen and journeyman Aaron King.

Their presence up top puts Toia in a position that is unfamiliar to fans that saw him play in Tucson, left back. He didn’t play in the back for FC Tucson, but he isn’t unfamiliar with defense.

“It wasn’t too much of a transition,” said Toia, who played in the back during his time with Real Salt Lake’s reserve team. “It’s not too bad. I just had to get used to it. I think I played pretty well.”

It was a rocky game for the team, but it marks Toia’s full return to professional soccer. It’s a place he likes to be.

“We have some high expectations,” Toia said. “But everything, the facility, the coach, everything has been quality.”

Phoenix FC makes it's home debut on Saturday against VSI Tampa Bay at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 pm. Check phoenixfc.com for ticket information.
