Aztec softball piles up runs in double victories

Thanks to

Momentum is still very much on the Pima Comunity College softball team's side after their 9-0 record last week. The Aztecs won a doubleheader over Paradise Valley on Tuesday at the West Campus.

The Aztecs used a 10-run first inning to win 11-4 in the initial game. Mari Contreras (Sunnyside HS) had a bit of a rough outing but Shayna Binnion (Marana HS) came in for relief and pitched four shut-out innings. She got the win and improved to 3-0 on the year.

Jessica Sipe (Moutain View HS) got the offense started with an RBI single in the first inning. Later, Jessica Schneider (Sahuaro HS) hit a 2-run homerto give Pima a 10-0 lead. Sipe went 2 for 3 and scored a run while Schneider went 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) and Monet Ormsby (Cholla HS) combined to shut out Paradise Valley in Pima's 8-0, 5-inning win in the second contest.

Alvarez (11-4) took the win, pitching four innings and giving up two hits with four strikeouts.

The offense showed its power hitting four home runs. Noelle Medina (San Manuel HS) and Shawna Comeaux (Sabino HS) each hit solo shots in the second inning. The Aztecs scored four runs in the third inning thanks to Jessica Sipe's (Mountain View HS) 2-run homer and Medina's 2-run double. Medina finished 2 for 2 and also scored two runs. Alvarez hit her solo homer in the 4th inning.

The Aztecs are now 34-7 overall and 24-4 in conference play. Pima is home on Saturday when they play a doubleheader against Eastern Arizona College at the West Campus. The first game starts at noon.
