Aztec track teams break 3 school records at Nationals

The Pima Community College track and field teams broke three school records on Friday, in the first day of the NJCAA Indoor National Championships at Texas Tech Univeristy in Lubbock.

After seven events, the men’s team sits in ninth place out of 23 teams. The women’s team is tied for 18th place out of 22 teams. 

In men’s competition, Austin Stone, Lance Ross (Flowing Wells HS), Luis Gonzales (Buena HS) and Alejandro Valencia (Rio Rico HS) earned All-American status after finishing the distance medley in third place with a time of 10 minutes, 16.91 seconds. They broke the school record that was set last year: 10:22.38. They were ranked 10th going into the race. Aaron Orduno (Dobson HS) finished ninth in the shot put with a throw of 51’6 1/2” which broke the 2011 school record of 51’3”. 

In women’s competition, Shelby Slocum (Sahuaro HS), Aly Haskell (Empire HS), Lucia Hernandez (Tucson Magnet HS) and Nikki Regalado (Cienega HS) took seventh in the distance medley and set a new school record with a finish of 12:55.85. The previous record was 13:10.80, set in 2004. The distance medley team was ranked 11th going into the race.

The Indoor National Championships conclude Saturday at Texas Tech University.
