The Pima Community College women’s tennis team (1-0, 1-0 in ACCAC) scored a big ACCAC conference victory to open the 2018 season on Thursday at the West Campus tennis courts.
The Aztecs beat No. 13-ranked Eastern Arizona College 5-4. Freshman Ashley Fitzsimmons (Walden Grove HS) and sophomore Jayme Shafer (Tucson HS) scored big victories for the Aztecs in singles and doubles play.
Fitzsimmons sealed the win for the Aztecs after she won her No. 5 singles match 6-4, 6-3. Shafer won her No. 6 singles match 6-1, 6-4. The duo rallied from a 2-5 deficit to win at No. 3 doubles 9-8 (7-3 in the tiebreaker).
Sophomore Lien Nguyen earned the other singles victory for the Aztecs as she won at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-3.
Nguyen and her No. 2 doubles partner Meghan Houk (Corona del Sol HS) won their match 8-2. Houk fell at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-0.
Sophomore Emma Oropeza (Nogales HS) and Janine Fernando (Sabino HS) dropped their No. 1 doubles match 8-5. Oropeza fell at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0 while Fernando lost at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-3.
The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Tennis Courts on Tuesday when both the men’s and women’s teams host Mesa Community College at 1:30 p.m.
