FC Tucson: Let it snow; games will go on

Team in note to fans says 'soccer is a beautiful game that sometimes must be played in very un-beautiful weather'

Wednesday night's two scheduled Desert Diamond Cup matches will go on despite the snow falling around Tucson.

FC Tucson posted a note to fans on their website:

Oh, and soccer players play in the rain. And the cold. And just about any type of weather that isn’t the climatic scene from the movie “The Day After Tomorrow.” This is a part of who we are. And if you haven’t already gotten your ticket we want you to come and be a part of this.

Soccer is a beautiful game that sometimes must be played in very un-beautiful weather. That will probably be the case tonight. But it’s still going to be fun. Because this is soccer. This isn’t work. This isn’t visiting your in-laws that may or may not still resent you. And this isn’t watching Les Miserables (seriously that movie just wouldn’t end).

The weather is more familiar to the teams visiting from Salt Lake City, Boston, New York and Seattle than it is to local organizers. FC Tucson managing partner Greg Foster called it an "unprecedented situation."

"We are researching what kind of ball is the right one to use," said Foster.

In most places in the world, the team would typically use orange balls so they can be seen against the snow. Trouble is, who would keep them on hand here?

Soccer is played in all weather, with games usually only suspended for lightning. This leads to many matches being played in not-so-nice weather. A 2011 Europa League match between Lech Poznań and Juventus FC featured a sub-freezing temperatures and a blanket of snow in the second half.
