Soccer: Earthquakes rock Houston

Former Electricista Emerson notches 2 in bid to be on squad

San Jose fielded a line-up consisting mostly of trialists in their second half against MLS Cup runner up Houston on Tuesday and it paid off as San Jose native Alexandre Emerson notched two goals at Tucson's Kino Sports Park.

The Earthquakes shook down the Dynamo 2-0 on Emerson's effort.

Injuries and absences for San Jose’s first team gave many players with little playing time a chance to shine in the first half, with second-year player Sam Garza getting an early shot on goal.

For Houston, the star was Giles Barnes. The former attacking midfielder for West Bromwich Albion FC and Doncaster Rovers was a season acquisition for the Dynamo last year. He caused fits for the San Jose defense, and his enthusiasm for the ball led him to crash into the barrier behind the goal. Later, he knocked over a temporary security gate.

Despite Barnes’ passion, he was unable to score.

The second half saw both teams change out. Many of the second-half Quakes were listed on the roster sheet without numbers. Emerson, who spent some time with Mexican club Necaxa, earned his brace with a goal in the 56th minute and a late-game penalty kick.

The Earthquakes play against Colorado on Friday, the same day that Houston will face Vancouver. Both games will be at Kino Sports Park.
