Aztecs track & field racks up wins

The Pima Community College men’s and women’s track & field teams competed in their first indoor meet of the 2013 season at Paradise Valley Community College on Saturday.

On the men’s side, four competitors for the Aztecs produced Indoor National Championship qualifying marks. Eddie Willcox (Chandler HS) won the high jump with an Indoor Nationals qualifying leap of 2.10 meters. Aaron Orduno (Dobson HS) placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 16.46 meters, which is a qualifying throw and ranks him fourth in the country. Ruben Canastillo (Pueblo HS) took second place in the 600-meter race with a qualifying time of 1:23.10 while Lance Ross (Flowing Wells HS) finished third with a qualifying time of 1:24.62. 

Aren Maxwell (Flowing Wells HS) took first place in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 9:36.24. Deante Gaines (Cibola HS) took second in the long jump with a 6.79-meter leap.

On the women’s side, Makaela Pratt (Willow Canyon HS) won the 200 and 400-meter events and anchored the 4x400-meter relay team that also finished in first place. She took the 200-meter event with a time of 26.60 seconds. She won the 400-meter race with a time of 1 minute, 01.43 seconds. The 4x400-relay team of Ally Haskell (Empire HS), Karen Cooper (Empire HS), Tenishia Reynolds (Sabino HS) and Pratt finished with a winning time of 4:16.52. 

Haskell won the 600=meter race with a time of 1:42.32 while Lucia Hernandez (Tucson Magnet HS) won her 1,000-meter event with a time of 3:18.31. Marlee Sherwood (Mesa Mountain View HS) won the triple jump with a leap of 10.90 meters.

The track & field teams will head back to Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix next Friday and Saturday.
