Jiang Zemin and the end of an era

Rumors that Jiang Zemin is gravely ill escalated yesterday when a Hong Kong television station reported the former Chinese President had died.

There has been confirmation of Jiang's death, and today, 24 hours after the initial report, China's official news agency called the report "pure rumor", but since totalitarian regimes have a history of reporting similar news when and as they like, often days later, plenty of smart money continues to think Jiang is dead.

Jiang was (is?) a major force in continuing the reforms of predecessor Deng Xiaoping that have resulted in China's extraordinary economic growth of the past 20 years, but also saw rampant corruption and cronyism flourish under his tenure.

And of course, he wore his trousers extremely high.

Roberto De Vido writes cartoons and comics about politics, sports (and life) from a small fishing and farming village an hour southwest of Tokyo.

“We reported that Jiang was in critical condition or died based on several sources, but a figure in Beijing called us at noon to inform us that his condition has improved.”
