Rick Perry has made false or exaggerated claims on U.S. oil imports, the federal debt, Social Security and the federal health care law.
The Texas governor gave a speech Aug. 13 in South Carolina to announce he will run for the Republican presidential nomination. As we have for other declared candidates, we offer here a summary of his past statements that we have found to be false or misleading. We also reviewed his weekend speech and found other questionable claims.

Rick Perry is a liar and bigot. Under Perry, Texas public school students are experiencing “dumbing down”: if elected, it is highly probable all public school students in our nation will experience the same environment.
Texas supposedly has a lower rate of unemployment than many other states, but also has the highest number of employed working at minimum wage, and the highest number of uninsured workers. It is touted that more people have moved to TX, which grows its “thriving economy” - but the main reason they come to TX is because of the cheap cost of houses. ( Some of the reasons for cheap housing are cheap labor and no labor union worries, that would guarantee an apprenticeship and experienced trades in construction,
and little oversight of construction methods and materials: lax laws and good ol boy palm greasing regarding same.) Sell your house just about anywhere else in the nation, and come to TX and buy your new house for cash, and live on the balance, so you won’t need a job…and you might collect unemployment from the previous state in which you lived. Your kids won’t have to study in school, because they’ve already learned what TX schools teach at a comparable grade level: TX also employs teachers who haven’t even graduated from a certified college with a bachelor’s degree: this meshes with dumbing down and saves on teacher salaries.
These are just a few examples of Perry “budget balancing”.
