Perhaps the NATO people aren’t really interested in hearing the protestors, maybe?
The First Amendment guarantees us all the right to speak our minds, absolutely. However, the First Amendment does not obligate me to listen to anyone. If I’m having a function or event, I believe that I am entitled to do it in peace, free from disruption from a bunch of unwashed idiots who-much more often than not-have no idea what they’re talking about, anyway.
I find it grossly inconsistent that a group of people will be outraged at a group of protestors at a funeral, demanding that protestors be moved out of earshot. Yet the same group of people will be outraged at a group of protestors being moved out of earshot of any other event. You can’t have it both ways.
I assure you, if anyone is interested in hearing what you have to say, they’ll find a way to hear you…even two blocks away from the event.
@Bret Linden
Recall that the First Amendment also guarantees the rights to assemble, and petition the government - not just free speech.
Well, you’re right. But where can they assemble and where can they not? That’s a question I think will eventually end up in the Supreme Court, if it hasn’t already.
But to redress the government…I honestly don’t know if a NATO summit applies. I guess our government signed the NATO treaty, and we’re a member, but does that really qualify NATO as a government entity? Kind of a gray area to me.
But, I gotta be honest with you Dylan (and whomever else is reading this)...the people who protest NATO and the G8 summit and so horrendously uneducated and ignorant to the world around them. They really wear thin on me. In the real world they’re not making any difference whatsoever, and so very few care what they have to say because they don’t know what they’re talking about, anyway. I just wish these particular protestors will stop wasting everyone’s time, including their own. I guess that makes me an asshole, but I’m just being honest about how I feel.
@Bret Linden And what of the Tea Partiers who will show up to demonstrate in Charlotte?
@Dylan Smith
Sorry, it’s early in the morning…what’s in Charlotte?
