McCain widens lead over Hayworth

Sen. John McCain has a 20-point lead over former Rep. J.D. Hayworth in the Republican primary race, says the latest poll by Rasmussen Reports.

McCain gets the nod from 54 percent of likely voters in the survey. Hayworth is supported by 34 percent.

"Some other candidate" - Rasmussen's apparently forgotten that Jim Deakin is the candidate of the Tea Party types - is supported by 7 percent, and 6 percent are undecided.

A month ago, the incumbent senator topped a Rasmussen poll, with 47 - 36 percent over Hayworth.

Rasmussen, whose likely voter model has been taken to task by some critics, surveyed 595 GOP primary voters on July 21. The poll has a margin of error of 4 points, Rasmussen says.

Arizona's primary election is Aug. 24. The voter registration deadline is July 26; early voting begins July 29.
