In the 235 years since the U.S. flag was adopted by the Continental Congress, it's seen the addition of a few stars and a stripe or three has been added and removed.

It's been flown from the top of the Capitol and printed on underwear, carried into battle and featured in holiday ads from car dealers.

There's an American flag on the moon, and today, June 14, you'll no doubt see flags flying in more places than usual - it's Flag Day.

Although it's not an official federal holiday, Flag Day was first proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Congress established National Flag Day in 1949.

The current 50-star, 13-stripe flag was instituted in 1959, after the admission of Alaska and Hawaii as states.
