7 arrested; meth, cocaine and pot seized

Seven suspected drug smugglers were arrested and 40 pounds of methamphetamine, 3 pounds of cocaine and more than 1,700 pounds of marijuana were seized by border agents in separate incidents over the weekend, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said.

Customs and Border Protection agents arrested a 31-year-old man at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales on Friday who attempted to bring 40 pounds of methamphetamine and 3 pounds of cocaine into the United States, CBP said.

The man was referred for a secondary inspection of his SUV after a CBP canine detected the presence of drugs. Agents found 27 packages containing more than $620,000 worth of meth and one package of cocaine worth $27,300, CBP said.

The drugs and vehicles were seized and the man was turned over to ICE's Homeland Security Investigations, CBP said.

Also on Friday, Sonoita Station agents working with a canine team near Huachuca City arrested a driver and passenger of a vehicle found to be carrying 48 bundles of marijuana that weighed 1,202 pounds, the Border Patrol said.

The vehicle and drugs, worth $601,000, were seized. The driver and passenger face prosecution, the Border Patrol said.

On Saturday, Sonoita agents tracked four people carrying backpacks and walking toward four pickups near the ghost town of Washington Camp, north of Duquesne, the Border Patrol said.

Agents apprehended the people and found they were carrying 32 bundles of marijuana that weighed 562 pounds and is worth $281,000. The vehicles and drugs were seized and the suspects face prosecution, the Border Patrol said.
