Pima County public health director moving to Maricopa County post

Marcy Flanagan, director of the Pima County Health Department since 2017 and a longtime county health staffer, is moving to Maricopa County to head up the Public Health Department.

Flanagan worked for Pima County for 18 years, including as deputy director for the Health Department. She'll take up her new job on June 10.

In 2011, when Flanagan was in charge of food-service health inspections, she worked with local restaurants to ease approvals for small gardens for fresh vegetables grown on-site.

"While it is bittersweet to leave my outstanding staff and community in Pima County, it is the right time for me to use the skills I have attained to lead the third-largest health jurisdiction in the nation," she said in a news release from Maricopa County.

In her new post, Flanagan will oversee the Phoenix metro area's response to public health emergencies, as well as routine health policy and enforcement with a department about twice the size as Pima County's.

“It was an exhaustive search to find the right person to lead such an important department here in Maricopa County,” said Joy Rich, county manager for Maricopa County. “We are confident that we found that person in our own backyard. Marcy has a perfect blend of public health experience along with local knowledge which will allow her to hit the ground running and keep Public Health propelling forward.”
