I-10 reopens at New Mexico line after dust storm

Interstate 10 has reopened after a dust storm closed a 132-mile stretch of the highway from the Arizona state line to Las Cruces, N.M.

During the closure, Arizona Department of Public Safety officers were requiring drivers who wish to proceed past the state border to turn around at U.S. 191, just east of Willcox.

DPS had closed the eastbound lanes of I-10 at U.S. 191 (Exit 352), according to a state Department of Transportation press release.

ADOT recommends the following driving tips when encountering limited visibility in a dust storm:

  • Check traffic immediately around your vehicle (front, back and to the side) and begin slowing down
  • Look for a safe place to pull completely off the paved portion of the roadway
  • Stop the vehicle in a position ensuring it is a safe distance from the main roadway and not near where any vehicles may travel
  • Turn off all vehicle lights
  • Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake
  • Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelts buckled and wait for the storm to pass
  • Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially aware of changing weather conditions and travel at reduced speeds.
