CBP seizes 12 lbs of heroin, 7 lbs of meth

Three arrested at port in Nogales in separate incidents

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized nearly 12 pounds of heroin and almost 7 pounds of methamphetamine over the weekend at the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, CBP said.

A 46-year-old Tucson man was referred for secondary inspection of his pickup Friday where a CBP officer noticed the engine of the vehicle appeared to have been tampered with, CBP said.

Officers found seven packages of methamphetamine weighing almost 7 pounds and worth $106,000 hidden in the engine compartment, CBP said.

On Saturday, a 33-year-old Glendale man attempting to enter the United States was referred to a secondary inspection of his car when a CBP canine alerted officers to possible drugs, CBP said.

Officers found four packages of heroin hidden in luggage. The drugs weighed 8 pounds and are worth $102,000, CBP said.

An 18-year-old Mexican man was arrested after officers found nearly 5 pounds of heroin, worth $62,000, hidden inside his truck's tailgate during a secondary inspection, CBP said.

In all three instances, the suspects were arrested and turned over to ICE's Homeland Security Investigations. The drugs and vehicles were seized, CBP said.
