Parks renamed to honor Jan 8. shooting victims

Pima County renames two areas to honor Zimmerman, Green

Two Pima County park facilities will be renamed to honor victims of the Jan. 8 shooting in Tucson.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to rename the Davidson Canyon trailhead in honor of Gabriel Zimmerman, an aide to U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and rename the Cañada del Oro River Park for 9-year old victim Christina-Taylor Green.

Other victims of the shooting will be memorialized through trail markers at the Davidson Canyon trailhead, the board decided.

Zimmerman, 30, was an avid outdoorsman, said his father, Ross Zimmerman, in a press release from Giffords' office. The trail is a good fit for a tribute to someone who enjoyed the desert so much, he said.

“Gabe was immersed in the natural world of the Desert Southwest from birth,” his father said.

Zimmerman was a member of the Arizona Trail Association, which asked the board to rename the trail in his honor. His mother, Emily Nottingham, is president of the association and enjoyed exploring the areas around the trail with her son.

“The spot chosen to memorialize our son is a fascinating confluence of Sonoran Desert edge and sheer canyon walls with beautiful vegetation,” Zimmerman said. “Gabe visited the area with Emily on several occasions and we are touched that the trailhead there will bear his name.”

Supervisor Ray Carroll said that the renaming had support from multiple agencies.

“This is an appropriate tribute for fine public servant who greatly enjoyed Arizona’s outdoors,” he said.

The Tucson National Estates Improvement Association proposed that the county rename the Cañada del Oro River Park for Christina-Taylor Green.

It will now be known as the Cañada del Oro Christina-Taylor Green Memorial River Park. The park runs along the Cañada del Oro wash from North La Cholla Boulevard to North Thornydale Road.

Zimmerman and Green were killed Jan. 8 in what authorities are calling an assassination attempt on the congresswoman.

Six were killed in the attack, and 13 others, including Giffords, were wounded. Jared Lee Loughner, 22, has been charged in the mass shooting.

Giffords was transferred last month to a Houston rehabilitation facility. All the others injured in the attack were released from the hospital.
