St. Gregory student wins national academic award

Senior Amanda Liu, bound for Brown, gets $2K scholarship

St. Gregory senior Amanda Liu has won a national college scholarship for her academic achievements.

Amanda was named the winner of the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement, which consists of a $2,000 scholarship and recognition in USA Today.

Amanda, a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist who has a grade point average of 4.4, will attend Brown University, where she has been accepted into the Program in Liberal Medical Education. The eight-year continuum combines liberal arts and professional education, culminating in a medical degree.

Scott Morris, head of the science department at St. Gregory, 3231 N. Craycroft Road, said Amanda has made him a better teacher.

"I will miss her, sitting up front to the right, carefully weighing every word, nodding in affirmation - or not. Man, I hate it when she isn’t nodding.’’
