Northwest Side food bank to open Saturdays

Interfaith Community Services announced that it will open its food bank on Saturdays, beginning Jan. 30.

The Northwest Side agency will be one of five Community Food Bank partners giving out emergency food boxes on Saturdays.

The ICS food bank, 2820 W. Ina Road, will be open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. It is open the same hours on weekdays.

More than 30 food pantries and neighborhood centers distribute the food boxes, according to the organization. Recipients can go to any one to receive their monthly box of food.

"Expanding our food bank hours to Saturday will allow us to better serve working Pima County residents who are still struggling to make ends meet," said ICS Executive Director Bonnie Kampa in a news release. "It will also be a volunteer opportunity for people whose work schedules keep them from being able to help on weekdays."

ICS will also accept food donations during its Saturday hours.

ICS distributed Community Food Bank emergency food boxes, its own Holiday Food Packages and other donated food to nearly 28,000 recipients in the fiscal year that ended last June 30, a 55 percent increase over the previous year, the organization says.

Interfaith Community Services is a nonprofit that serves the elderly, disabled and disadvantaged with a food bank, Mobile Meals service and emergency financial assistance.
