Douglas Port officers find assault rifle bound for Mexico taped to man's torso

A Douglas-area man was arrested Saturday for allegedly trying to smuggle an M-4 assault rifle into Mexico through the Douglas Port of Entry, officials said.

Officers noticed the weapon during outbound inspections at the port, according to a news release from Customs and Border Protection. The semi-automatic rifle had been disassembled and taped to the 21-year old man’s torso.

Officers seized the weapon and turned the suspect over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation. Officials did not identify the arrested man.

In October, officers at the Douglas port stopped another man from smuggling five semi-automatic rifles, a pistol and 2,000 rounds of ammunition into Mexico. In fiscal year 2014, officials working border crossings in Arizona seized five rifles and four handguns, with five rifles and eight handguns seized in 2013.
