Loughner the night of his arrest.
A just-released April report said Jan. 8 shooter Jared Loughner was competent to stand trial, but might not remain so. Loughner “does suffer from a severe mental illness,” it said, “and his condition may wax and wane. Consequently, the possibility exists that he may decompensate during the criminal process.”... I used the analogy before, but it bears repeating…
Loughner stole a $500 TV set, and he’s only having to pay $5 restitution.
What is disheartening is that so many of his victims are being victimized again. First they get shot, then they get brainwashed into thinking that this deal is somehow OK.
I acknowledge the next fact may be personal preference, but there’s nothing wrong with testifying. It’s empowering, and it’s a release. The victims did nothing wrong, and they have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. There should be no reservations about standing up and telling their stories.
Were I one of the surviving victims, I would need to testify. I would need to look Loughner in his eyes and let that pathetic attention-whore loser know that he didn’t get the best of me. I would need the sense of justice, and the sense of closure. I would need the security in that Loughner is getting the needle, and partly because I stood up to him. Were I one of the surviving victims, not being able to testify is something I wouldn’t be able to live with.
But, again, that’s just me.
