Tucson, LA mayors call for Jan. 8 memorial bell-ringing

The mayors of Tucson and Los Angeles are calling on mayors across the country to lead their cities in ringing bells to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 8 shootings. L.A.‘s Antonio Villaraigosa, the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, said his fellow leaders should “affirm our commitment to a new civility in politics.”... Read more»

Six were killed and 13 others wounded in the attack, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Why does it always have to be “including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords” as if she were more important or something? More than anything, I wish the Sentinel and each and every other mass-media outlet would either choose to list ALL the names, or none of them. Putting one victim over the others is nothing short of absolutely disgusting.

L.A.‘s Antonio Villaraigosa, the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, said his fellow leaders should “affirm our commitment to a new civility in politics.”

I am now at the point where I am officially sick of the term “civility”. I hate how it’s been hijacked and redefined to essentially mean “censorship.” Perhaps someone should send each mayor that signed that idiotic “civility accord” a dictionary with the page that contains “civility” bookmarked and the definition highlighted.

Mayor Jonathan Rothschild asked Tucsonans to “rededicate ourselves to coming together as a community, as we did in the aftermath of the shooting.”

Tucsonans should ring a bell at 10:11 a.m. Sunday morning — the time of the shootings — “in honor of the victims and survivors of this tragedy,” a press release from his office said.

“I would like to thank Mayor Villaraigosa for his leadership in promoting the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Civility Accord,” Rothschild said.

“I would also like to thank my fellow mayors for standing with Tucson as we remember the pain of that day but also the coming together as a community that was so strongly apparent in the moments and days after the shooting and which persists to this day,” he said.

Very good. Even though he’s only been in office roughly a month, and I don’t want to jinx it here…but this Rothschild guy seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I hate how he plugged the “Civility accord”, but the rest of his quotes are non-partisan, intelligent, lucid, and unifying. Rothschild is not trivializing or marginalizing the pain, suffering, and loss of other victims of this tragedy and their families by placing them below one particular victim, as many others-including the Sentinel.

Keep up the good work, Mayor Rothschild. After 12 years of a brain dead moron as mayor, you seem to be the breath of fresh air this community so desperately needs.

Why is it always “...including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.”??? I hate how every mass media outlet puts one victim over the others, as if the other victims and their families didn’t experience loss, pain, or suffering or something. The right thing to do would be either to list the names of ALL the victims, or none of them. To put one over the others is nothing less than absolutely disgusting, and it needs to finally stop.

Let’s rewrite that sentence, just to try in on for size, shall we?

“Six were killed and 13 others wounded in the attack”.

See, what in the world is wrong with that? Is that quote not factual? Does it take away anything from the story? Is there anyone on the planet at this point who doesn’t know that Giffords was shot that day?

I got a lot to say about this story, so I’m about to go Britannicus on y’all here with another post or two…

Damn duplicate post. I thought my first one didn’t make it. Dammit. Well, here’s another one…

To me, the first anniversary is just going to be a source of anger for me. It will mark one year that we’ve all been waiting for Jared Loughner to finally be held accountable for his idiotic and tragic actions that day. I understand the wheels of justice turn slowly, but there should be a limit to that. Reason has to work its way into the process somewhere, and a year and counting for his trial to start is absolutely unacceptable, no matter what standards you measure it by.

Given your usual viewpoint, one would think you’d be used to looking to the right, Bret.

@Dylan Smith

Put some stories in here that are actually from a right-wing perspective, and you’ll see me bash them equally. I’m looking forward to the day when I am able to prove that to you.

@Bret Linden

You missed the point, Bret. I meant physically look to the right, and read the sidebar on the story.

@Dylan Smith

Very good. Props for that list. But, that list wasn’t there when I initially read the story, which was before you put in the final paragraph of the body. The editing is probably what sent my posts haywire and caused the duplicates, but I’m disgressing…

But, my point stands…you’re still putting Giffords above everyone else in the body of the story, and it ain’t right. But, I will acknowledge that having the sidebar story is better than not having it. So, you’re moving in the right direction here.

But for one Buckmaster show, they’re ALL “guest opinion”. I was speaking of stories that are under the Front Page or Local sections…

But if you want me to reread those pieces and bash some of those guys, I’m more than happy to do that. :)

Sorry, we missed your input...

User Guidelines

Please be respectful and relevant. Thought-provoking. Or at least funny.

We want comments to advance the discussion and we need your help. Debate, disagree, yell (digitally) or laugh, but do it with respect.

We won't censor your comments if we don't agree with you; we want viewpoints from across the political spectrum. We're dedicated to sparking an open, active discussion. We believe people with differing opinions can spark debate and effect change.

Comments are open to registered users of TucsonSentinel.com.

Keep in mind:

  • A conversation involves sharing and respect. Support your viewpoint with facts, not attacks.
  • Ask questions. Search out answers.
  • Remember that being part of a community requires tolerance for differing views.
  • We can't ensure that all comments are based in truth. The only comments we endorse are those we write ourselves.

TucsonSentinel.com does not allow:

  • Hate speech. Blatantly racist, sexist or homophobic slurs or calls for violence against a particular type of person, etc. will be removed.
  • Obscenity & excessive cursing. Sometimes a well-placed curse word - if you're creative enough to get it past our auto-censor - can express your point in just the right way. But we say '%*$& no' to cursing for cursing's sake. And lose the explicit sexually-descriptive language. It doesn't contribute to the debate and there are plenty of other places on the Internet to find it.
  • Flaming. During a heated discussion, unkind words may be spoken. We can live with a certain amount of rudeness in the name of provocative conversation, but a pattern of personal attacks (name-calling, mocking, or baiting) is not acceptable nor are threatening or harassing comments. Show some respect, please.
  • Spam. Solicitation of products or services isn't allowed; contact us about advertising, we'd love to talk to you. Links to off-topic sites may be deleted.
  • Copyright or IP infringement. Lengthy quotes and violations of 'Fair Use' aren't allowed. Anything you post should be your own work.
  • Overposting. Don't bore people and waste electrons with identical comments on multiple stories or repetitive comments that don't advance a conversation.
  • Trolling, sockpuppetry, and other abusive behavior. Please don't feed the trolls and don't pretend to be someone you're not.
  • Gossip. Don't bring up others who can't defend themselves. We don't give out personal information; you shouldn't either.

Comments that violate these guidelines may be removed. We reserve the right to make up the rules as we go along.

Flagging

Commentors are solely responsible for the opinions they express and the accuracy of the information they provide. Users who violate these standards may lose their privileges on TucsonSentinel.com.

Sentinel editors can't read every comment. Trolls, spammers and other troublemakers can slide under the bridge. We rely on you to help maintain a healthy conversation - more than likely, you're reading these comments before the editors.

What if you see something inappropriate? Use the 'Flag' button to send it to a moderation queue. Help us out and tell us why you're reporting it; please don't report someone just because you disagree with them. Boy who cried wolf and all that. We'll take appropriate action on violations.

We will not edit comments to alter their meaning or censor comments because of political content.

We will not remove comments solely because they are heartless, cruel, coarse, foolish or just plain wrong. Your disapproval can maintain a decent signal to noise ratio. Ultimately, however, self-policing is the best method.

Bottom line, don't be a jerk.
