'80s party Sat. previews Underground Film Festival

Participants invited to dress up as favorite 80s nilihist, punk or other characters

The 5th annual Arizona Underground Film Festival (Sept 21-29) kicks off Saturday night with an free '80s No Wave Punk Block Party at LoveSmack Studios, 19 E. Toole Ave. The party will feature dancing, no-host drinks and No Wave film screenings until 2 a.m.

Participants are invited to dress up as their favorite '80s nilihist, punk or other relevant character. Or not. It’s a party celebrating the 1980s, so, like, whatever.

Music will be provided by DJs Herm, Dewtron, E. Rupt, Ben Beshaw, Plastic Disease, Zackey Force Funk and Bonus. Satry Entertainment will provide party lighting.

Artworks by area artists, inspired by cult films, will also be displayed. The artists include Mark Matlock, Elizabeth Albert, Joe Pagnac, Ed Murren III, Donovan White, Jerry Wagner and Anna Bronwyn and others.

The festival itself will open Friday, Sept. 21, with the Arizona premier of Italian cult film “The Legend of Kaspar Hauser.” Festival films will play primarily at The Screening Room, 127 E. Congress Street, plus two films on Saturday nights at Crossroads Cinema, 4811 E. Grant Road.

The festival’s full schedule, with links to individual films, is available online at azuff.org/festival-schedule. Individual screenings are $7.50. A limited number of festival passes are also available.
