Not a fish tale: Abe Vigoda dead at 94

It's not a hoax this time, folks: weary-eyed character actor Abe Vigoda, long the subject of rumors of his passing, died Tuesday at age 94. In his honor, here's the theme to "Barney Miller" to get stuck in your head.

The three-time Emmy nominee was best known for his part as cranky Det. Phil Fish on the 1970s TV cop sitcom, but he also appeared as mob hitman Sal Tessio in the first two Godfather films, uttering the famous line, "Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes."

He also played the lead role in "Fish," a short-lived late '70s spin-off of "Barney Miller."

Vigoda was the subject of many death rumors, dating back as late as a mistaken report by People magazine in 1982. A website was set up to answer the query: isabevigodadead.com. Tuesday, it was updated to read simply, "Yes. (February 24, 1921 - January 26, 2016)."
