Megadeth to rock Rialto with 'Rust in Peace' show

March's 20th anniversary 'Rust In Peace' tour to hit Tucson

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of their thrash classic "Rust In Peace," Megadeth will spend the month of March touring the country playing the album in its entirety. Tucson was announced yesterday as one of the lucky cities to host the landmark concert, on March 30.

Megadeth was formed in 1983 by Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson. The band were, with Slayer, Metallica and others, pioneers of a new hybrid of metal and punk dubbed thrash, from which many an ear has split and many a head has banged. Their first several albums were as hard and fast as possible, seeming to leave a damaged silence in their wake.

"Rust In Peace" is arguably the most complex and fully-formed record in Megadeth's catalog. The album marks the arrival of a sober leader in Dave Mustaine, who had left Metallica after forming the band with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich in 1983, allegedly due to his substance abuse. What emerged with the 1990 album is more complicated song structure. The band also reflects deeper influences on the record, of both progressive rock and more obscure Eastern melodic strains.

This is not to say that the album fails to bring the heavy; rather, Megadeth folds more into the musical batter and goes beyond the regularity of 80s thrash. The formidable technical prowess of the band is shown to best advantage by the record's sophisticated compositions. Any appreciator of good rock playing is sure to want to see whether these guys still have the chops to do it justice after two decades.

Megadeth will be joined on the tour by fellow 80s and 90s metal giants Testament and Exodus. Tickets go on sale Saturday morning, and a sellout is likely.
